Five people reportedly died in the accident, one of whom was a student of Kogi State Polytechnic. This angered students and they began rioting at the international market, along Lokoja-Abuja highway.
According to reports from students of the institution on Facebook, the Kogi State Polytechnic student killed in the accident was a female student. She was about to cross the road on her way to school for an examination when the trailer failed brake and crushed her.

Angry students have vandalized the traffic light at the junction and also set the Dangote truck on fire. A student said law enforcement agencies have arrived the scene to restore order.
