APC-led Federal Government Has Failed – Group

A group, Forum of Former Students Union Government Presidents, Ebonyi State, on Thursday, took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that the party had dashed the hopes of Nigerians, who were desperate for positive change in the country.

This, the group said, was more worrisome given that Nigerians voted the party into power against popular expectation in order to effect a change that would transform the nation.

At a press conference in Abakaliki, the group noted that almost three years in power, the party had neither ensured the security of Nigerians nor improved the economy, much less to convincingly fight corruption, which were the major reasons upon which Nigerians voted it into power.

James Ogbunku, the president of the forum, observed that Nigeria had seen tough times but that at no other time in the past had the nation experienced the level of hunger, hardship and killings as being witnessed today under the APC-led Federal Government with things getting worse by the day.

The former students’ leaders, however, acknowledged the unavoidable challenges inherent in leadership but stressed that President Buhari has no reason not to deliver on the mandate which the people of Nigeria overwhelmingly handed to him in 2015.

They condemned the abduction of more girls by Boko Haram terrorists and the killings by the armed Fulani herdsmen, adding that the continuous acts of wickedness by the terrorists and the herders calls for a change of strategy by the security agencies.

“The Nigerian people have over the years become acclimatized with trying times especially economic and security wise .This is even against the backdrop of many expectations that greeted the last general election held in 2015.More worrisome is that the situation is becoming a macabre.

“While we appreciate the challenges of leadership mostly in pursuit of good governance and quality leadership, it is necessary to remind the Federal Government that they do not have any appreciable reason not to deliver on the mandate handed to them by Nigerians to make our country great again.

“We condemn the incessant waste of human lives by the Fulani herdsmen and the recent kidnap of Dapchi girls by the Boko Haram terrorists and call on the security agencies to sit up urgently while the Federal Government move to find lasting solution to the menace.”

The ex-students leaders, however, said that the situation in the country has not called for military intervention and commended the military for supporting the growth of democracy in the country.
